HOW DO CHILDREN LIVE IN THE PRISONS?

As outrageous as it may seem, in Ecuador children often MUST accompany their parents in prison for lack of another care giver. In prison the conditions of these childrens' life are inadequate for their health and upgrowing.

- The prisons are cramped and virtually devoid of basic sanitary facilities.

- Insufficient housing capacity, reduced cells, absence of appropriate spaces.

- There is no food destined for the children.

- Due to the lack of proper control, children are continually exposed to both physical and psychological abuse.  In some cases they are sexual abused.

- The staff in the prisons are not trained to properly take care of the children and their detained mothers.

THE IMPACT OF LIFE IN PRISON:

The children suffer:

- Chronic Diarrhea

- Lower and upper respiratory tract infections

- Skin diseases

- Chronic and severe malnutrition.

 - Intestinal parasites.

- Anemia

PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT:

- Below average mental development in 67% of the children.

- Deficient cognitive skills.

- School drop-outs.

- Violent and aggressive behavior.

- Low self-esteem.

- Neuroses and lack of self control.

- Prostitution and/or drug addiction

- They are stigmatized and suffer social rejection.

- Not able to show affection.

PRISON SENTENCES IN ECUADOR ARE LONGER THAN BEFORE. MANY PARENTS OF THE AFFECTED CHILDREN HAVE SENTENCES UP TO 16 YEARS.

Although the prison authorities have made efforts to re-locate the children in other institutions, they have had very little success. This is in part due to the stigmatization to these children as spawns of criminals and the inability to attend to their particular needs. As an effect, the children tend to escape to live on the streets or they return to their parents in jail.
